In Luke chapter 20 Jesus asked the religious leaders about the baptism of John. Was this baptism of God or man was the question at hand.
Why was this question so controversial? If these folks said the baptism of John was of God the response would be why then did you not believe him?
First we need to realize that this baptism was one specific baptism. The Greek uses the definite article. It is not a referance to John baptizing the multitudes. This is refering to when John baptized Jesus in the Jordan river. To say that this baptism of Jesus by John was of God was to acknowledge a change from an Old Covenant priesthood to a New Testament Priesthood.
John was the legal Old Testament priest on both his father and mother s' side (see Luke 1:5) (note Caiaphas was Rome's appointment, but not our Lords' Under Jewish law the outgoing Priest always baptized the incoming Priest.
To recognize that this baptism was of God was to acknowledge that a New Covenant was on the scene. May we rejoice in the Truth that old things are passed away and all things have become new. (see 2 Corinthians 5:17)
May you and I see and perceive more clearly on a daily basis.
